Altare di Sant'Ambrogio | storia dell'arte in pillole

Art history in brief is a new journey by Artesplorando. Here I'll talk about Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Truth. ▼▼CONTINUE BELOW▼▼ The Golden Altar of Sant'Ambrogio represents the most significant example of the artistic transformations that took place in Lombardy during the 9th century. Both altar and sarcophagus, it represents an original reworking of the ancient Roman theme of confession, the small underground cell that housed the body of a Christian believer, often martyred, whose remains could be viewed by the faithful through small windows in the cell's walls. The altar, commissioned in Milan by Archbishop Angilbert I, cannot be assigned to any specific Carolingian school. The use of cloisonné enamel to frame the scenes is important for placing this altar within the Milanese art movement. Indeed, the cloisonné enamel technique was still unknown in Northern Europe. The video is also subtitled in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.
