The Ostia seafront has been separated from the city of Rome for decades; beach resort concessionaires have built barriers and walls that block views of the sea. By violating regulations and concessions, they have made the beaches almost completely inaccessible. During our journey along the coast, we saw it all: entrances established by the Port Authority and reopened by the Marino administration were blocked with reinforced concrete blocks, other entrances walled up or closed with gates. By analyzing the documents that survived the fire that destroyed all the original plans of the establishments and comparing them with satellite photos, we reconstructed how some concessionaires expanded their facilities right up to the shoreline.
