Renaissance of the Dinosaurs | Dinosaurs Inside and Out | Episode 1
When dinosaur fossils first emerged from the ground, almost nothing was known about how these animals actually lived. Today, new discoveries from Montana to Argentina are overturning a century of assumptions, revealing creatures that were faster, more agile, and far more complex than the lumbering reptiles once imagined. This episode follows paleontologist Jack Horner, whose work has helped redefine the modern understanding of dinosaurs. In 1978, a chance visit to a fossil shop in Bynum, Montana led Horner to a site that would become known as Egg Mountain, the first nesting ground of baby dinosaurs ever found in North America, yielding eggs, hatchlings, and even fossilized embryos. The discovery opened a long-standing question in paleontology: did dinosaurs behave more like reptiles, independent from birth, or more like birds, dependent on parental care? The episode also traces the century-old debate over the connection between dinosaurs and birds, beginning with the 1861 discovery of Archaeopteryx in Germany, and follows paleontologist Paul Sereno's work in Argentina, where the discovery of Herrerasaurus and Eoraptor, among the earliest known dinosaurs, reveals how bipedal stance, serrated teeth, and a unique sliding jaw joint allowed early dinosaurs to outcompete the mammal-like reptiles that came before them. A look at how modern paleontology is rebuilding the picture of dinosaurs from the inside out, not as oversized lizards, but as dynamic, fast-evolving animals that ruled the planet for over 150 million years.
