How does asylum work in Switzerland
Switzerland has a humanitarian tradition and deals with relatively more asylum requests than other European countries, given the size of the population. Over 14,000 applications were submitted in 2019 and about a third of these people were admitted provisionally. However, migrants heading for Europe often prefer to go to neighbouring Germany and France. The Swiss asylum authorities say a procedure that quickly sends failed applicants back home deters them. If people are recognised as refugees, they might get help with living costs and finding a job, but the road to integration is a long one. In this ‘Switzerland Explained’ video, find out how the asylum process works and what conditions for asylum-seekers in Switzerland are like. --- swissinfo.ch is the international branch of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
