Alferce a Barranco do Demo 🚶🏻‍♀️ en la Sierra de Monchique

The Alferce - Barranco do Demo trail runs through the Serra de Monchique mountain range in the Portuguese Algarve. We start from the Church of São Romà de Alferce and head towards Alto de Baixo. The beautiful views of the northern foothills of the mountain range make the first stretches of the ascent more enjoyable. Cork oaks, eucalyptus, oak trees, the diverse flora, and the plutonic syenite rock adorn the slopes of the route through Monte da Serra. Afterwards, we enter the valley formed by the Barranco do Demo ravine. Here, we will pass through the settlement of an open community and follow a couple of tributary streams that invigorate us with their small waterfalls, pools, and rapids. Next, we'll climb to Cerro do Castelo de Alferce to visit the remains of an ancient fortified Muslim settlement and a viewpoint with sweeping views of the Ribeira de Odelouca river basin. The route then descends to the Pasarelas del Barranco do Demo (Devil's Ravine Footbridges). This infrastructure allows us to cross the ravine via wooden platforms and a fascinating suspension bridge.
