The police receive alarming reports of problems in dysfunctional families from clinics, schools, kindergartens, and simply from neighbors. The inspectors have a regular closed-door day: they visit families already on their radar at least once a month. Judging by the signs in the entryway, there are many visitors. And most of them are uninvited, as the condition of the door suggests. The inspectors aren't greeted with much joy: the electricity had just been cut off in the apartment for nonpayment, and the parents had clearly been partying hard the night before. The inspectors have known this family for a long time. Yulia, at 24, has accomplished a lot: she's given birth to four children and served time in prison for drug charges. Her eldest child lives with her first husband, two more are in an orphanage, and now the woman risks losing her daughter as well. She would have been taken away long ago if not for her grandmother, who is essentially raising her granddaughter. And in this apartment, the two-year-old isn't even home: supposedly he lives with his father during the week, and Alena is a weekend mom. The inspectors are sure to return with a simple question: how are things? It's important for the police to know the condition of the apartment, the children's diet, and what they wear. Sometimes things are so bad that the officers can't wait. However, such cases are becoming less common. According to statistics, most parents do try to reform when they realize their children will be taken away.
