This morning I’m fishing the famous March Pool on the south bank of the River Spey near Ballindalloch Castle. It’s early spring, the river is running clear at a good height, and conditions look promising for Atlantic salmon as I work a floating line and a small dressed fly through one of my favourite stretches of water. The March Pool sits on the boundary between Tulchan and Ballindalloch, and I always enjoy fishing it from the south bank, where the casting is easier and the shingle allows for a natural swing through the pool. As I scan the water, I think through the lies—expecting fish to hold in the deep channel—but also reminding myself to cover every part of the pool, including the shallow water where fish can easily be missed. After moving a few fish on the first run through, I hook into what first feels like a small fish… until it suddenly comes alive. A strong Atlantic salmon is on, and the fight begins in earnest. It runs upstream, shakes its head, and uses the current as I work line carefully and keep pressure on to control the fish. As it comes closer, the salmon shows itself—bright silver and fresh from the sea. The fight tightens in the shallow water, and I carefully bring it toward the bank, choosing my ground and waiting for the right moment to land it cleanly without a net. After a tense final few minutes, the fish is safely beached. An incredible fresh-run Atlantic salmon, estimated around 8–9lb, full of power and condition. After a quick photo and full recovery in the water, it swims strongly back to its lie. A truly special encounter on one of Scotland’s most iconic salmon rivers. #salmonfishing #RiverSpey #FlyFishing #AtlanticSalmon #ScotlandFishing #SpeyCasting #RiverSpey #SalmonFishing #AtlanticSalmon #FlyFishing #ScotlandFishing #SpeyCasting #FishingScotland #FishingAdventure SUBSCRIBE Here: / finlinefly
