From June 22, 19412, the city suffered its first airborne raid with the aim of blocking the entrance to the bays and therefore destroying the port facilities.. Since the beginning of hostilities, defence works were carried out on the approaches to the city. From October 30, 1941, the defence of Sevastopol began and lasted for some 250 days. The defenders of the city were geographically cut off from the mainland as they fought against a superior attacking force... The population of the city actively participated in defensive construction, worked at special plants, served the wounded, participated in local air defence. By the end of June 1942, ammunition, food, and drinking water began to be scarce. . Then, according to the decision of the Supreme Headquarters of June 30, 1942, Soviet troops retreated from Sevastopol. From July 4, 1942 to May 9, 1944, Sevastopol was occupied by German Nazi troops. Despite the brutal occupation, an underground organisation associated with partisans operated in the city. In May 1944 as a result of the Crimean military operation Sevastopol was liberated. In 1945, Sevastopol was included in the 15 Soviet cities by order of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR to be given priority restoration.....
