Meinir Mathias and Mari Mathias: Swansea College of Art's annual St David's Day Lecture 2022

Mother and Daughter deliver Swansea College of Art's St David's Day lecture. In our 2022 lecture annual St David’s Day Lecture, artist Meinir Mathias and her daughter, singer Mari Mathias give talk about their bilingual careers and work in the creative industries. This lecture is part of annual St David's Day celebrations at Swansea College of Art University of Wales Trinity Saint David to include a lecture and awards to celebrate and take pride in the use of Welsh by successful creative people. Trinity Saint David is very close to the heart of the two, as they are both graduates of the University. Meinir graduated with a BA in Fine Art followed by an MA in Fine Art from the Carmarthen campus and Mari is a graduate of BA Perfformio (Performing Arts) Cardiff. Meinir Mathias is a Contemporary Welsh painter. Her work explores ideas related to cultural memory, history, land and people. Her work is rooted in Welsh culture yet connecting with personal experience and memory. Her works often draw on historical events and folk imagery and challenge the complex human relationship with land and its history. Meinir brings Welsh cultural events and characters from history to life by re-imagining it in a contemporary context. Mari Mathias aw ell known Welsh singer, loves to give her own contemporary take on traditional folk tunes. She is based in Cardiff having completed a Master’s degree in Songwriting and Production. Over the last few years Mari has supported performers such as Gruff Rhys, Meic Stevens and Plu. She has performed at events ranging from St Fagans Museum to HubFest, Immersed Festival, Clwb Ifor Bach, Swansea Festival and the Big Cwtch Festival. She released her EP 'Spirit of the House' in March 2020, produced by Mei Gwynedd after winning the Battle of the Bands (Maes B) at the National Eisteddfod, 2019. Her track "Hello" was track of the week on BBC Radio Wales. Mari is a graduate of the Forte Project, she is now performing with a new and exciting ensemble of young folk musicians with her new material. This lecture is part of the University's 'Pethau Bychain' campaign which prides itself on the Welsh language,
