A CHEAP and HOMEMADE alternative to Plastic Plaster that you can make yourself RUSTIC FINISHES ON WALLS: SPLATTERED PLASTER (Balé or Piruleado) Splattered plaster with a manual machine is the easiest and most economical way to achieve rustic finishes for all types of walls. Although some people confuse it with rustic bagged plaster, it's not exactly the same. In this video, I'll show you a step-by-step HOMEMADE way to make splattered plaster. It's very simple, and I dare say anyone can do it. Some people know it as chapisco, balai, splatter plaster, Salpicrete, or simply Salpicre. In short, it's nothing more than a cement-based coating that allows you to achieve rustic finishes on exterior and interior walls. The appearance of this textured plaster is similar to plastic siding (it's not the same), but it's much more affordable. BASE FOR APPLYING SALPICRETE PLASTER This textured plaster is applied over coarse plaster, as the idea is to give the wall a final finish. The plaster should be even and, if possible, free of streaks, which are difficult to cover later. The base should be pre-moistened so that it doesn't "absorb" the moisture from the cement-based plaster and dry it too quickly. Although it's widely used as an exterior textured plaster, it's very common for textured finishes on interior walls. SPLATTER MIX: PREPARATION Although the market offers pre-colored spatter in bags, I promised to explain how to make homemade textured plaster. For the video you're about to see, we used a mixture of: 1 part cement 2 parts sand It's important that the sand be properly sifted to remove any debris or pebbles that could later scratch the surface of the rustic cement plaster. This cement spatter is also known in some places as a Tyrolean plaster or gotelé plaster. An ECONOMICAL and HOMEMADE ALTERNATIVE to Plastic Plaster: APPLYING SPACERT ON EXTERIOR WALLS By turning the handle of the plaster spatter machine, a first load is made until the bottom is evenly covered. This semi-liquid consistency results in a finer and more even granules. After covering an entire surface with the first load, let the spatter plaster air dry until it reaches a certain consistency. Although it depends on the weather, I'd say no more than 10 to 15 minutes. After that, repeat the same procedure with a second load of material. The important thing is to achieve a thickness of a few millimeters, which will allow us to later apply the ironing treatment to the textured finish. IRONING: HOW TO FINISH RUSTIC PLASTER The secret to making spatter plaster look better is to remove some of its rusticity by ironing it. The technique consists of gently smoothing the surface with a plastic float or wooden trowel. The secret to a good final appearance depends on two key points: The pressure used to smooth, to achieve a balance between the smoothed and unsmoothed areas. The "drying point" the mixture must have to avoid drag marks. CORRECTIONS TO THE FATTED SPLATTER Scratches: From small stones, coarse sand, or because marks from the base show through.
