Public murals are powerful to me because they are simply paintings on a wall rather than on canvas. The act of painting becomes more direct and immediate. In this video I demonstrate the process behind seven pixel style portrait murals featuring eight different characters. Each portrait is inspired by real individuals including Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Gervonta Tank Davis, Lorenzo Simpson, Kenny Ellis, Calvin Ford, and Mia Ellis. The portraits vary in scale, ranging from approximately 4 x 5 feet to 10 x 8 feet. The murals are located in different places including the Upton Boxing Center in Baltimore, Maryland and sites in New Haven, Connecticut. These works were executed between 2020 and 2024. My approach is based on a technical method I developed while studying printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The process draws from the basic principles of screen printing and translates them into mural painting. I combine digital preparation with projection mapping to transfer the image onto the wall. Permanent marker is used to establish the pixel structure and acrylic water based paint completes the surface. Through this method each portrait is constructed from thousands of small painted units, similar to pixels in a digital image or dots in a print. The result is a mural language that merges printmaking logic, digital structure, and direct hand painting on architectural surfaces.
