Torsion of Non-Circular Cross-Sections (or, Open Sections Suck in Torsion)

LECTURE 16: Here equations are introduced for finding stress and deformation of torsionally-loaded members with non-circular cross sections. Calculations are demonstrated for rectangular cross-sections, and open and closed thin-walled cross sections. Shearing stress, angle of twist, and torsional springrate are computed. It is shown that open thin-walled cross-sections withstand torsion very poorly.
