Aula Magna - Porque estudar Matemática no Sec. XXI

Cláudio Possani (IME – USP) We will address two complementary aspects of Mathematics, understood in a broad sense that includes Computing, Statistics, and Applied Mathematics. One aspect is its abstraction and generality, which is strikingly expressed in the axiomatic view of Mathematics. Another aspect is the profound association between Mathematics and Reality that makes this science a fundamental instrument in the applications of science to the real world. The two aspects combined make Mathematics essential to society. Biography: Claudio Possani is a mathematician and educator with extensive experience in teacher training, mathematics education, and science communication. He graduated in Mathematics from the University of São Paulo (1976), where he also obtained his master's degree (1979) and doctorate (1989). He was a professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at USP (University of São Paulo) and held important academic and administrative positions, including the Presidency of the Institute's Undergraduate Committee and advisory role to the USP Pro-Rectorate for Undergraduate Studies (1998–2002), during which time he participated in the creation of the teacher training course for Early Childhood Education offered in partnership by USP, UNESP, and PUC-SP. He also served as Advisor for International Relations at USP and Director of the Inter-unit Center for the History of Science. Possani plays a prominent role in popularizing mathematics for the general public: he maintains a science outreach channel on YouTube with over 125,000 followers, participates in initiatives such as the USP Twins Panel, and gives lectures and conducts activities aimed at bringing the university and society closer together. His areas of interest include Geometry, Dynamical Systems, and the History of Mathematics. In addition to his academic career, he also works on cultural and educational projects and is president of the Advisory Board of the Alliance Française of São Paulo and of the Association of Friends of the Museum of Contemporary Art of USP.
