How silent is a suppressor?? A-Tec Wave Carbon
How silent is a suppressor? In this video we mount the A-Tec Wave Carbon suppressor (1/2-28 thread) on my Bergara B14R rifle and take it to the range at 50 yards. We’ll test how much sound reduction we actually get, check the point of impact shift, and see how it all performs under real-world conditions. / thegunviking • Eley .22lr ammunition • Bergara B14R ammo tests • Test of subsonic rimfire ammunition • Suppressors and silencers Test Setup Rifle: Bergara B14R Suppressor: A-Tec Wave Carbon, thread 1/2-28 UNEF Weight: 84 g Diameter: 31.5 mm Added length: 138 mm Total length: 150 mm Distance: 50 yards Procedure: Fire a control series (no suppressor) to measure decibel baseline and zero the rifle. Attach suppressor and fire 15 shots. Record decibel level, and note any shift in point of impact (POI). Expectations The manufacturer lists sound reduction at around 35-36 dB (C) for the Wave Carbon series. We expect a meaningful reduction and minimal POI shift, but real-world results may vary. Results With suppressor mounted the average reading was 78.6 dB. This equates to a reduction of 30.4 dB compared to the baseline. According to our calculations: a ~30 dB reduction means the actual sound energy is reduced by roughly a factor of one thousand, and the perceived loudness to the human ear is typically 8-10 times weaker. We also observed the point of impact shift: the hit group moved approximately ¼ to ½ inch to the right with the suppressor mounted. So while the suppression figure fell a bit short of the claimed spec, the performance is still very solid and the audible difference is substantial. Conclusion The A-Tec Wave Carbon delivers a serious sound drop and is lightweight and compact. The POI shift is manageable (important to re-zero or account for it). If you’re looking for a suppressor for rimfire or small-caliber rifle work at moderate distances, this one is absolutely worth a look.
