The origin of the Tamil language is attributed to the sage Agasthya, and the origin of Siddha medicine is also attributed to him. Principle of Siddha system of medicine The universe consists of two essential entities: matter and energy. The Siddhas call them Siva (male) and Shakti (female,creation). Matter cannot exist without energy inherent in it and vice versa. Five basic elements their names are munn (solid), neer (fluid), thee (radiance), vayu (gas) and aakasam (ether). These five elements (bhutas) are present in every substance, but in different proportions. The physiological function in the body is mediated by three substances (dravyas), whichare made up of the five elements. Triguna according to Siddha medicine The tridoshas are involved in all functions of the body, physical, mental and emotional. 1. Vatham: a. Characteristic is dryness, lightness, coldness and motility. b. Formed by aakasam and vayu, controls the nervous action that constitute movement, activity, sensation, etc. c. Vatham predominates in the bone. d. Vatham predominates in first one-third of life when activities, growth, sharpness of function of sense are greater. 2. Pitham: a. Heat, formed by thee, controls the metabolic activity of the body, digestion, warmth, lustre, intellect, assimilation, etc. b. Pitham predominates in the tissue blood. c. Pitham predominates in the second one third of life. 3. Karpam: a. Characteristic is Smoothness, firmness, viscidity, heaviness. b. Formed by munn and neer, controls the stability of the body such as strength, potency, smooth working of joints. c. Karpam predominates in other tissues. d. Karpam predominates in the last one-third of life. Diminishing activity of various organs and limbs. Food is the basic building material of the human body and gets processed into humours, tissues and wastes. The equilibrium of humours is considered as health and its disturbance or imbalance leads to a diseased state. Treatment is aimed at restoring balance to the mind-body system. Diet, lifestyle, yoga and meditation play a major role not only in maintaining health but also in curing diseases.
