The XPR is a 21st-century rifle, as different from its 20th-century ancestor, the Model 70, as your iPad is from a mid-1950s black-and-white television. The XPR's angular, streamlined bolt carrier incorporates a heavy tubular receiver with a small ejection port, a massive bolt with three locking lugs, an extremely rigid synthetic stock, and an excellent trigger. Winchester did a clever job here. Although the receiver is circular in cross-section, making it rigid, the surfaces it rests on are flat, preventing twisting and wobbling. This has a positive effect on accuracy: if you ensure rigidity and stress-free operation of any component—if you design a rifle so that it cannot twist, twist, bend, or flex—it will shoot. Winchester did it, and the XPR shoots. ✅ The XPR is an affordable rifle. It has many competitors, none of which are masterpieces of gunsmithing, but some look as if their creators were in a hurry. They're crudely and sloppily assembled, with gaping holes everywhere, and the trigger pull is mediocre or poor. However, some, like the Weatherby Vanguard, are impeccable. The same is true of the XPR. There's no trace of sloppy manufacturing; everything operates cleanly and precisely. On our test XPR, the trigger provides near-perfect release with a 3,500-pound pull weight, which feels lighter than it actually is. ✅ The XPR's bolt is electroplated with a nickel-Teflon compound, which ensures smooth sliding of the bolt in the receiver and also makes it quite rust-resistant. The bolt itself has three lugs instead of two, resulting in a short 60-degree lift. The receiver is drilled and tapped for 8/40 screws, which are much stronger than the standard 6/48 screws typically used. ✅ A two-position safety allows you to unload the rifle with the trigger locked if unloading is a concern. Feeding is from a detachable three-round magazine. Despite the cold and wind, the XPR shot very well.
