World Reporter Kim Jun-woo reports. 【Reporter】 On the 6th, the Chinese Navy test-fired a ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine toward the Pacific Ocean. The missile is highly likely to be the third-generation SLBM Juliang-3; with a range of over 10,000 km, it places not only the U.S. mainland but most of the globe within striking distance. The United States, Australia, Japan, and others immediately condemned China, stating that it is threatening regional stability. The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is also considering adopting a joint statement condemning China. The United States and Russia, which possess 90% of the world's nuclear weapons, officially terminated the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), the last official nuclear disarmament agreement, last February. The legal constraints restricting the possession and operational deployment of nuclear weapons have been lifted. The United States has declared a resumption of nuclear testing and has begun modernizing its nuclear forces, and Russia is also pushing forward with its latest strategic weapon systems, including test-firing the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). In response to the threat from Russia, Europe is also strengthening its nuclear deterrence. Finland and Lithuania have moved to repeal laws prohibiting the possession of nuclear weapons, and France has decided to expand its nuclear umbrella to other European countries.
