Despite its old-timey sound it was composed not that long ago, near the end of the 20th century, with its history and meaning well documented. Elk River originally flowed through a region where Ernie Carpenter grew up. The construction of the Sutton dam forced his family among many others to relocate as the terrain was flooded. The piece is an expression of his longing for the childhood lost in the water. It doesn't have a typical blues structure so the "blues" is mainly the emotional ingredient. The piece has a crooked structure often heard in traditional appalachian music. It has a natural flow but it requires a certain level of rhytmic awareness from those who attempt to play it.
