Running Through New York | First-Person Timelapse: 726 Years in 9 Minutes
New York didn't happen overnight — it happened one century at a time, and this video finally lets you run through all of them. This video follows a single fixed path through Manhattan — the ancient Wickquasgeck trail, later known as Lower Broadway — always heading toward the same harbor. Everything around that path changes: the land, the people, the skyline. The route itself never does. One of the strangest chapters along this path begins in 1626, when Dutch settlers acquired the island from the Lenape for a handful of trade goods worth 60 guilders — two sides of the deal likely walking away with two completely different understandings of what had just happened. Decades later, a wooden defensive wall built along this same route would leave its name behind forever: Wall Street. And the harbor waiting at the end of every scene would eventually hold Henry Hudson's ship, the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers, and — much later — two beams of light rising in their place. Across four centuries, this same stretch of land absorbed fire, revolution, economic collapse, and blackout after blackout — the 1776 fire, the opening of the Erie Canal, the 1863 riots, the 1929 crash, the 1977 blackout — each one leaving a mark without ever shifting the line of the street itself. The video unfolds in three parts. Part One – A wild island becomes Lenape land, then New Amsterdam. Part Two – Colonial rule gives way to revolution and a young nation. Part Three – Industrial expansion carries the city into its modern form. Every scene is shot from the same fixed viewpoint — a street modeled on the historic Wickquasgeck trail, one of the oldest continuously used paths in New York City, later paved over into Broadway. A quick note: this is a creative reconstruction of Manhattan's transformation, not a documentary reenactment. I aimed for historical grounding wherever possible, but across seven centuries of change, some compression and simplification was unavoidable.
