In East Africa lies a small, unrecognized state called Somaliland, which, unlike many of its neighbors, is a functioning territory. In 1991, with the fall of dictator Siad Barre, Somaliland declared its independence from the rest of Somalia. Although it has not yet been recognized by the international community, the country located northwest of Somalia has enjoyed peace and stability for the past thirty years. An ARTE team traveled to Somaliland to learn firsthand about the challenges facing this young nation, which boasts exceptional rates of violence and economic growth in the region and, of course, a far cry from the country to which it once belonged.
