The project is an effort to halt the expansion of the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts. A new study reveals that these planted trees are growing much faster than natural forests. Researchers used satellite data to track the leaf area index, a measure of tree canopy density that is a key indicator of how much carbon a forest absorbs. The results were quite surprising.
