Railway construction was the largest infrastructure project of the mid-19th century. Railway construction in West Java was quite difficult due to the geographical conditions of the region, particularly the Priangan region, which is largely mountainous and hilly. Railway construction in Priangan began in 1878, with surveying and mapping work. The first railway line in Priangan was the Buitenzorg (Bogor)-Bandung-Cicalengka railway line. This railway line was built by the Staatsspoorwegen (SS) railway company owned by the Dutch East Indies government. The construction of this railway line served both economic and political purposes, as Bogor served as the seat of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies (at the Bogor Palace) and the center of government administration. The Sukabumi-Bandung railway line was constructed in stages: 1. Sukabumi-Cianjur, 39 km long, opened on May 10, 1883. 2. Cianjur-Bandung, 60 km long, opened on May 17, 1884. The construction of this railway line significantly impacted the growth and development of Bandung. Also known as the "Paris of Java," the city grew rapidly into a major metropolis. Over time, between 1902 and 1906, the Dutch East Indies government also built another railway line to Bandung, extending from Karawang to Padalarang. Padalarang Station was the junction point with the Jakarta-Bogor-Sukabumi-Bandung railway line. The Bandung-Sukabumi railway line was temporarily suspended in 2001 due to the collapse of the Lampegan tunnel. However, it was ultimately decided that the local train, often called the "Argo Peyeum" by locals, would operate only as far as Lampegan. In 2013, the Bandung-Lampegan train service was discontinued due to a lack of spare parts for the pulling locomotives and the absence of a PSO contract between PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the government. In 2014, the government completed the revitalization of the Sukabumi-Cianjur train line. That same year, the Sukabumi-Cianjur train line was reactivated with the Siliwangi train service. In 2019, the Siliwangi train service was extended to Ciranjang, and in 2020, it was extended again to Cipatat. The government's current task is to revitalize the 16-km Cipatat-Padalarang train line, known for its extreme and steep terrain, prompting the Directorate General of Railways to consider changing the existing route.
