SealHeart - Michael Kelly - (original selkie song)
Song about a selkie, the fey folk out of Irish folklore that live in and around the ocean and assume the form of seals by wearing a sealskin. They're often a source of tragedy in stories about them, but this song has a much happier ending than most. SEALHEART (c) Michael Kelly February, 2016 Oh, my name it is Michael, a fisherman's son and it's here on the coast I was born As a boy, I was lulled by the sounds of the surf and I rose to the breakers each morn. Though I haven't the skills of my father hauling fish with the nets or the line Every man has a calling that speaks to his soul, and the life of a singer is mine. And it's many the day that I'd sit by the shore, Just my strings, and my voice, and the sea And the soulful, dark eyes of the seals as they'd watch from the waves, while they listened to me. And I sang to them joy, love, and sorrow, life and loss, and the terrors of war, And the longing of all Caledonia's sons who will see Caledonia no more. On the glassy black waters were gathered the seals as I sang a sweet, mournful refrain But with the rise of the moon, each dark shape slipped away until naught but a single remained And the sealskin, it slid from her shoulders as she stepped to the land from the tide No seal, but a lady with soulful, dark eyes as she laid the skin down by my side. Many hours I lingered there, lost in her gaze as we knelt by the edge of the sand And she whispered of secrets that lay in the deep, while I sang of my life on the land 'Til the golden sun broke the horizon, and she gathered her sealskin, so fine But before she returned to the sea's cold embrace, with a sigh, she touched her lips to mine. Though a singer am I, and a rover, by trade, and my travel oft draws me away, Through the years, I've come back to that place by the shore where I first met my selkie that day. Though it's far from the land she might wander, From the world and the kenning of men No matter the distance, she always returns to my voice, and my side once again Though she may be a child of the ocean, and her heart is the soul of the sea, I dream of the day I'll return to her arms, Of the day she returns to me
