Wandering Merchant Rag sight-read by Tom Brier
Thursday, I received a message from "elyawy" asking for my opinion of his first completed rag. I liked it and asked if he had sheet music or could hand-play a MIDI file, for I was headed to the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival the next day. He sent me two hand-played MIDI files, and I transcribed the music that night so that I could present it to Tom Brier in front of other ragtime fans during one of the after-hours parties. The piece is unusual in that it goes from G to G-flat and back to G. The bridge back to G-flat has a lot of double-flats in it, which makes it tricky to read, hence Tom's struggles with that section. (Yet he manages to read the rest of the bits in G-flat just fine -- that's six flats!) You can hear Tom say "Cool!" at the end. He also later said, "I approve!" and that he wants to hear more from this composer, Elya Wygoda. You can download the sheet music here: http://www.keeper1st.com/music/wandme...
