Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Location: 101 N Big Trees Park Rd, Felton, CA 95018 (about 8 km from downtown Santa Cruz). It is famous for its old-growth redwood forest with trees up to 1,500 years old. It features the popular Redwood Grove Loop Trail, an easily accessible 1.2 km trail. The Redwood Forest Steam Train: This is the classic, historic experience with real steam locomotives. Travel over wooden trestles, climbing historic narrow-gauge tracks to the summit of Bear Mountain. The entire trip takes about 75 minutes (round trip). The locomotives (like the famous Shay or Heisler locomotives) date back to 1890. They were originally used to transport enormous redwood logs out of the mountains. The cars are usually open at the top so you can look up and admire the colossal treetops. During the ride, the conductor narrates the history of the area.
