Quantum Chemistry 0.1 - Introduction
Short lecture introducing quantum chemistry. Quantum chemistry is the application of quantum mechanics to chemical systems. Quantum mechanics is the laws of physics for very very small and very very light objects, such as electrons and nuclei. Quantum mechanics is very different from classical mechanics. In QM, we solve the Schrodinger equation for the wavefunctions of our particles, giving information about the probability of measuring various values for its physical properties. QM is very non-intuitive, and only certain allowed states are observed. This course covers the content of a one semester undergraduate physical chemistry course, including chapters on early quantum theory, classical waves, the Schrodinger equation, particle in a box, principles of quantum mechanics, harmonic oscillator, rigid rotor, hydrogen atom, approximation methods, many-electron atoms, diatomic molecules, polyatomic molecules, symmetry and group theory, nuclear magnetic resonance, and particle in a ring.
