We depart the "Barbarian Lands" of old, moving through the Vân Hồ district where the limestone cliffs disappear behind a curtain of ice-cold mist. In this episode, we navigate the iconic S-shaped road, tackle the brutally uneven ruts of Suối Lìn, and board the Vạn Yên Ferry—a modest 5,000 VND lifeline that connects the western mountains to the wider world of commerce. We trace the banks of the Sông Đà (Black River), a waterway that generates 30% of Vietnam’s electricity through the massive dams of Sơn La and Hòa Bình. There is no set schedule—the boat moves when it’s full or when the light is right. It’s the perfect moment to kill your engine, talk to the local traders, and soak in the scale of the Black River. The "Fog Wall" Warning: The descent from Mộc Châu into the Vân Hồ valleys is notorious for sudden, blinding mist. If you lose visibility, follow the white line on the right shoulder and watch for oncoming trucks—their high beams are your only guide in the "white-out." Logistics: Phù Yên is an excellent overnight stop. It has a high density of local guesthouses and is the perfect base before you tackle the Khau Phạ Pass in the next leg of the 6,500km mission.
