Nubank has just updated its card and promises to offer ZERO IOF (tax on financial transactions) to its customers who have the Ultraviolet card. So, is Nubank circumventing the IOF increase being imposed in Brazil? Recently things have been complicated; the IOF tax has been fluctuating a lot in recent months. It was 3.5%, then 1.1%, then went up to 3.38%, then back to 3.5%. It's quite confusing. But it's not the first time we've seen banks, like Nubank now, saying they'll eliminate IOF for their customers. Banks previously followed the strategy of global accounts, offering less IOF, but never zeroing it out. Now the story is about having a truly zero IOF tax, meaning that regardless of the IOF increase, theoretically you won't pay more fees. However, this isn't always true. There's another hidden fee besides IOF that many people don't know about, called the Spread. The spread is variable; the financial institution or bank can simply set whatever value they see fit. Nothing prevents the bank from eliminating the IOF (tax on financial transactions) and increasing the spread to compensate, for example. In this situation, you might think you're paying less in fees, but in the end, you'd be paying the same or even more. So, always keep an eye on the spread to avoid being scammed. I can tell you right now that this isn't the case with Nubank; the digital bank has actually been offering more options to its customers, which is excellent. In fact, if we compare the Nubank global account, the Nubank Ultraviolet credit card, and the regular Nubank credit card, we can see that each has its own benefits (in reality, the regular credit card ends up losing out against the other two payment methods).
