Inertia Relief in Nastran
Choosing the correct boundary condition is an important step of running a FEA analysis. But what if the correct boundary condition is no constraint at all? An aircraft in flight is in a state of static equilibrium. The aerodynamic forces on the vehicle are balanced out by inertial forces. Adding a constraint would not accurately model this problem. That’s why we use Inertia Relief when analyzing full vehicle models. Inertia Relief balances out the applied loads with equal and opposite accelerations, creating a state of static equilibrium and eliminating the need for constraints.
