Route 101 is a general national highway that runs along the west coast facing the Sea of Japan from Aomori to Akita prefectures. It overlaps or runs parallel to Route 7 in some sections from its starting point and ending point, as well as in some sections along the way. While Route 7 runs on the inland side, Route 101 runs on the Sea of Japan side and is popular as a coastal road overlooking the Sea of Japan. Along the road, there are many places of interest, such as the 15-meter-high Namahage standing statue, Koganezaki Furōfushi-onsen hot springs, and the Shirakami Mountains, which are registered as a World Heritage site. The JR Gonō Line runs alongside the road.
