I decided to make this video because it happens very often during driving tests that students ask me if they'll fail the test by stalling the engine. The driving test is often very stressful, so much so that it can make even those maneuvers that were performed easily and confidently during driving, and until a few hours before the test, become challenging because they were done without stress—autonomous behaviors, easily executed thanks to the experience gained precisely during driving tests. But during the test, everything changes, and the anxiety of having to pass it and being, so to speak, watched by someone watching how we drive, complicates everything, including normal starts. It can happen to anyone, even those who have had their license for years, to accidentally stall the car while starting off. But if it were to happen during the test, would you fail? The answer is... it depends, not necessarily. You fail a driving test if you fail to demonstrate proper driving skills, fail to use the controls properly, or if you make a mistake that could compromise your safety or that of other road users, such as failing to give way to pedestrians or other vehicles. Can turning off your car while starting off compromise road safety? It depends. If, STARTING FROM AN INTERSECTIONS, your car were to stall and stop in a dangerous position, perhaps in the middle of the intersection, especially if there are oncoming vehicles to whom you should be giving way and who, because of you, will be forced to stop (ALWAYS HOPING THEY WILL STOP), a critical situation would arise, and turning off your car would mean you'd be failing to give way. A situation like this will almost certainly result in a failure to take the test. But... if the car stalls while starting off, even from an intersection, but without creating a dangerous situation, a SERIOUS obstruction, or failure to yield right of way, the test will almost certainly be allowed to continue. For example, if we're in a queue with other vehicles and, perhaps while restarting yet again, we stall the engine, we wouldn't be creating any danger. We'd be just barely hindering the car for a few moments, just enough time to restart the engine and then drive off again. But, as mentioned, this situation can happen to anyone and isn't particularly complicated. What should you do in this case, after the car stalls? The key words are: calm and collected! After stalling the car, the most likely outcome is for the driver to rev it up quickly and try to drive off as quickly as possible to make up for the time lost. However, what most often happens in this case is the exact opposite of what you'd expect: by trying to restart quickly, the clutch is released too quickly, resulting in the car stalling again. So, what's the right thing to do? Let's try to maintain control: restart the car quickly, but take it easy when starting off. A slightly slower-than-average start is better than one that will stall the engine again. So, let's remember that stalling the car doesn't necessarily mean failing the test. It can happen, but most of the time, it doesn't: after stalling the car, the test will almost certainly continue. We'll certainly need to prove that it was a fluke; it's best not to let it happen again. It's crucial to stay calm and bring out the best in you to perhaps recover from the initial misstep. So, don't get discouraged, but rather, put in even more effort and give it your all. I hope this video has reassured you about what could happen if your engine stalls during the exam.
