Algerian Seismic Code (RPA): Past lessons, present challenges and future perspectives

Inappropriately designed to withstand seismic loading and defectively built reinforced concrete structures can be disastrous. The rate of severe damage and collapses of such structures during recent earthquakes is very alarming, as it happened during the last two major earthquakes that hit the Chlef and Boumerdes regions in 1980 and 2003 respectively. Within the framework of earthquake hazard mitigation, seismic codes provide provisions to enhance the seismic resistance of the buildings and consequently protect human lives and minimize property lost. In this presentation, professor Nouredine Bourahla will share with us the experience of the development of the Algerian Seismic code (RPA) through a historical background which highlights the major revisions and the lessons learned from the past, the current implementation challenges in the field and the future suggestion and proposal to enhance our building construction.
