Yoon In-ja is a film actress who won the Grand Bell Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 1964 film *Red Scarf*. Born in Sariwon, Hwanghae Province, she defected to South Korea at the age of 19 and rose to prominence as a stage actress. Around the age of thirty, she made her film debut in *The Hand of Fate*. Playing the role of a cabaret madam, she became an instant star with a kiss that was akin to touching the lips of a deceased lover. However, her husband treated her as an adulterous woman and went so far as to sue the film company. Despite her strong character, she followed her husband's wishes and left the film industry to become a country woman. Yet, her husband left her behind and went to Japan with a new person. Her pride wounded by her husband's betrayal, she decided to make a comeback in film and promised a future with her second man, Ko Sang-beom. Unable to have children, Yoon In-ja adopted a daughter, but as a consequence, the couple grew distant beyond repair. Her husband's wandering, which began with his wife abandoning the film industry and clinging entirely to the child, tormented her, but it was all in vain. Furthermore, her daughter, having discovered her secret, began to drift further and further away; exhausted by the struggles of life, she severed all ties and became a Buddhist nun. Returning to the open after two years, she sought out her daughter, whom she longed for even in her dreams, only to find that she had become a completely different person. Despite her humble dream of starting a family and living as an ordinary woman, Yoon In-ja found herself in a wretched state, without a husband or children. It was film director Im Kwon-taek who sought her out. In 1989, she returned to the big screen after 18 years, playing the role of Eun-seon, an elderly Buddhist nun, in the film *Aje Aje Bara Aje*. Having appeared in dozens of films, she gave her all in every humble role she took on. In a renovated house made of scales—which could be described as shabby, even modest, for a former star to live in—she soothed her painful past and sought out other lonely veteran actors like herself. Desiring to live the rest of her life as an actress, she played the gayageum and sang to remain a performer who was always prepared. Yoon In-ja, a veteran actress possessing a strong will much like the protagonists she starred in.
