This question, posed to the archipelago's inhabitants, is the culmination of a three-decade-long process... a roadmap established by the Matignon Accords of 1988. But before dialogue and negotiation, there was violence and a state of near-civil war that year. This was the bloody episode of the Ouvéa hostage-taking. In April 1988, between the two rounds of the French presidential election, gendarmes were taken hostage by Kanak separatists. The latter took up position in a cave on the island of Ouvéa. Paris ordered an intervention, which resulted in the release of the hostages, but not without a heavy human toll. A look back at these historic—and controversial—events with Julien Gasparutto (France 3).
