The Actual Cultural Center and Harde Publishing House invite you to a meeting celebrating the book "Congolese Hell. A Pole in an African Prison. A True Story" by Jarosław Kocemba and Mariusz Majewski. Polish traveler Mariusz Majewski's trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo suddenly turned into a nightmare. Detained without cause by Congolese soldiers, he was arrested and subsequently sent to Makala Prison, one of the harshest prisons in all of Africa. Water shortages, hunger, disease, lawlessness, brutal violence, and death were commonplace there. Wrongfully accused of espionage and sabotage, he awaited a sentence that could have been the death penalty. Freed thanks to diplomatic efforts and media coverage, he returned to Poland, but his prison experiences proved so harrowing that he was only able to share them a year and a half later. He told his story to journalist Jarosław Kocemba, which allowed for the reconstruction of the dramatic events.
