How does one destroy a kingdom that had unified the entire Iberian Peninsula, produced the first encyclopedia of the Middle Ages, and written the most advanced legal code in Europe? In 589, King Reccared convened the Third Council of Toledo and converted the Visigothic kingdom to Catholicism, closing the religious rift that had divided Hispania for a century. Saint Isidore of Seville wrote the Etymologies, twenty books that preserved the knowledge of Antiquity and became the most influential text of the Middle Ages. Recceswinth's Liber Iudiciorum (654) established a single law for Goths and Hispano-Romans: the greatest legal contribution of a Germanic people to Western law. But the elective monarchy became a breeding ground for conspiracies. Wamba, the last great king, was deposed in his sleep through a sacrament used as a political weapon. The noble factions tore each other apart. And when Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed the Strait in 711, the Visigothic nobles themselves betrayed their king, Roderic, during the Battle of Guadalete.
