Newlyn & Newlyn North | One Town - One History

Newlyn and Newlyn North are two small rural communities in central Victoria, but the reason they exist as separate places comes from a dispute between two post offices in 1915. In 1915, a dispute began when one post office, the Newlyn Railway Station Post Office was relocated to J. Walton's store and 60 residents petitioned to rename it the Newlyn Post Office name, while residents of the other, up north, had already operated as the Newlyn Post Office title for 46 years prior and 118 residents counter petitioned to retain the name. The decision eventually resulted in the Postmaster-General renaming the northern post office as Newlyn North and Walton's store got the title of now being the Newlyn Post Office. Today, Newlyn and Newlyn North are quiet examples of central Victoria’s country heritage with a few examples of some nice historic structures. Two towns but one shared history.
