Pomice, Akadama, Kanuma, Kiryzuna... Cosa cambia? - Come Iniziare a fare Bonsai EP. 5.1
Full analysis of bonsai substrates: pumice, akadama, kiryuzuna, kanuma, lapilli, zeolite, worm castings with properties, pH, drainage and how to use them. In this episode of the series "How to Start Growing Bonsai" I analyse each substrate in detail to help you compose the perfect mix for your trees. Substrates analysed: – Pumice: most widely used, affordable, excellent aeration, lightweight, durable, good moisture retention, rich in trace elements (also used pure for air layers and collected material) – Akadama: main Japanese substrate, dries quickly, iron-rich, excellent nutrient exchange capacity, neutral pH, breaks down after 4–5 years – Kiryuzuna: more durable than akadama, very free-draining, rich in trace elements, neutral pH, ideal for conifers – Kanuma: fragile structure, acidic pH (perfect for acid-loving plants: azaleas, maples, cork oaks, etc.), retains nutrients – Volcanic lapilli: very hard, extremely iron-rich, porous, retains a lot of water, heavy, ideal for balcony use (small percentages) – Zeolite: neutral/alkaline pH, retains water and nutrients, exchange capacity equal to or greater than akadama, rarely used (worth experimenting) – Worm castings: rich in humic/fulvic acids, easily assimilated nutrients, retains a lot of water (small percentages) 💡 Important note: Every mix must be tailored to your microclimate (garden/balcony, north/south-facing, watering frequency). 📌 Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: 30 likes reached, in-depth analysis 01:17 – Pumice: a great ally 02:38 – Akadama: the Swiss Army knife 02:52 – Kiryuzuna: friend of conifers and beyond 04:41 – Kanuma: perfect for acid-loving plants 05:49 – Volcanic lapilli: water reserve, but use with care 07:30 – Zeolite: hidden gem? 10:07 – Worm castings: a fertility boost 11:30 – Final tips and farewell 👋 About me I'm Mirco from Ancient Oak: in this series I provide detailed technical knowledge for beginners, from substrates to equipment and techniques.
