Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness due to a failure in communication between nerves and muscles. This condition occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that block or destroy many of the muscle receptors for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which prevents efficient muscle contraction. Symptoms include weakness in the muscles of the eyes, face, throat, and limbs, resulting in difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing, and performing simple movements. Proper management of myasthenia gravis can significantly improve the quality of life of patients, although there is still no definitive cure for the disease.
