02 The Motivation for Practicing Tantra 26-Jan-2010
This is a teaching by Lama Zopa Rinpoche from 2010 at Potowa Center in Indonesia. Rinpoche is giving a commentary on the practice of Lama Chopa (Guru Puja). 1. [00:00:01] To achieve enlightenment quickly, we need to practice tantra. Practicing only sutra, the Paramitayana path, takes three countless great eons to achieve enlightenment. 2. [00:07:40] The secret mantra Vajrayana is extremely special, like the sun and moon rising, much more special than the Paramitayana path. 3. [00:16:18] The self-cherishing thought is the root of all suffering and evil karma. It is a phenomenon to be thrown far away instantly, without even a minute's delay. 4. [00:27:32] We should put the blame on the self-cherishing thought for any undesirable suffering that arises. 5. [00:53:23] If we cherish everyone except for one sentient being that treats us badly, there is no enlightenment for us. Cherishing that one sentient being is most important. 6. [01:32:53] To liberate all sentient beings from samsara as quickly as possible, we must practice tantra which leads us to enlightenment in a brief lifetime of this degenerate time. 7. [01:41:46] The motivation for taking the Mahayana Tantra initiation of Guhyasamaja should be to achieve enlightenment as quickly as possible in order to perfectly benefit all sentient beings.
