While she dreams of becoming a poet, Marie Carpantier is appointed head of one of these homes. Although she reluctantly accepts her new responsibilities, discouraged by the behavior of these often rebellious children, lacking education, hygiene, and discipline, and by the complete absence of resources, she quickly realizes that it is possible to do much more than simply run a daycare. Driven by the strength of her conviction, she dedicated herself to capturing the interest of these children, offering them a basic education, and above all, teaching them to read and write before they too began working in factories at the age of seven. She poured all her energy into this endeavor, and through her efforts, succeeded in creating a true school, the precursor to our modern public and secular preschools.
