Welcome to the channel The Old West Theatre. Rural American South, the 1930s. The Depression has stripped the land down to its bones, and the small town of High Lonesome has stripped itself of something harder to name — decency. Walter Osgood is the only Black man left in the community, a sharecropper who has watched his family disappear one way or another under the weight of a hatred so entrenched that the townspeople no longer even question it. He has no idea whether his own son is alive. He works his land alone, keeps to himself, and endures — not because he has accepted what the town has done, but because a man who has already lost everything does not give his enemies the satisfaction of watching him run. Charlie is a young white boy who lives just close enough to Walter's farm to be a problem: half-wild, rifle in hand, a mother gone and a brutal drunk of a father who has taught him exactly enough about the world to make him dangerous. He fires at Walter's property. Walter does not fire back. Instead he does something that confuses the boy entirely — he treats him like a person worth talking to. What grows between an old man who has lost a son and a boy who has never had a father is not supposed to be possible in High Lonesome. The sheriff knows it. The town knows it.
