Sometimes shin pain can last for a few days or even months at a time. The constant pain from running can impede your running and even demotivate you, as you train for your races or just trying to go out for a comfortable run. Enter the hot and cold therapy solution! Hot and cold therapy is a method used to increase the blood flow to the affected area (in your case the shin muscles) in order to speed up the healing process of your muscular tissue and surrounding connective tissue. This is a common rehabilitation technique physiotherapists utilize to accelerate the healing process and control the pain symptoms, while returning clients to their normal pain-free condition. The great news is that you can go to your local supermarket and pick up the materials needed to set up a hot and cold therapy solution for yourself at home. In this video, we were able to replicate a therapeutic shin splint treatment using only $35. Here is a list of the materials purchased in the video: 2 x Water Buckets (5 Gallon Size) $6 1 x Bath Towel $8 4 x Small Ice Packs $4 1 x Kitchen Thermometer $15 Total cost with taxes: $34.98 With these materials, you will be creating contrast baths using one bucket filled with hot water and one bucket filled with cold water. The hot water bucket will be between 100-115 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold water bucket will be between 45-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Fun Fact: This is also known as hydrotherapy, which is the use of water as a therapeutic method. You will be placing one leg at a time in each contrast bath for 1 minute at a time and for a total of 20 minutes. The ice packs will be used to maintain the cold water within the desired range or to cool off the hot water. The bath towel will be used to keep your contrast bath area dry. Also, you will be using tap water to fill up your buckets, and a stopwatch will come in handy to keep track of your time. The two main muscles you are helping to heal up in your shin area are your tibialis anterior and your tibialis posterior. These are your main shin muscles that is causing your shin pain and shin inflammation. This hot and cold therapy method is designed to help alleviate the pain, reduce inflammation, and to promote the healing process of your shin muscles. You will need to tough it out during the cold phase, but you can do it Champ! Keep it up and I wish you a speedy recovery! -Hector -------------------------------------------------------------- Credits Music: YouTube Music Library www.epidemicsound.com
