Dear Comrades... Explain China's New Law

For decades, Indian communists and sections of the Left have fiercely opposed nationalism, cultural integration and the idea of a common national identity whenever these debates arise in India. But when the Chinese Communist Party pursues an even more sweeping programme of assimilation, the outrage is remarkably muted. China's new Ethnic Unity Law is not merely about language. It reaches into schools, families, culture and public life, promoting a single national identity under the leadership of the Communist Party. To understand why this law matters, we must first go back in history—to Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia—and examine how these distinct peoples became part of the modern Chinese state. This video explores the history behind China's frontier regions, the Communist Party's vision of national unity, and the striking contrast in how similar ideas are judged depending on who implements them.
