An ejection seat is the only device on board that saves a person by injuring them. To pull a pilot from a falling aircraft in a split second, they must be struck with life-threatening force. This story is about how engineers spent half a century learning to deliver this blow more precisely and gently, and the price pilots paid for every step. This episode covers the journey from an era when there was no escape (jet speed made jumping from the cockpit suicidal) to a seat that pulls a person out of a sheer fall and an inverted spin. The world's first ejection, by German Helmut Schenk in 1942. The jump of Briton Bernard Lynch, who voluntarily allowed himself to be ejected from an airplane. The fair price of a seat: one and a half tons on the spine and a person reduced in stature. Supersonic speed, which stripped a pilot down to the ring on his finger in the oncoming flow. And two engineering schools that took different paths to salvation: the British Martin-Baker with its tie for the rescued and more than seven thousand lives, and the Soviet Zvezda of Guy Severin with the K-36 seat. The climax is two scenes the world witnessed with its own eyes. Le Bourget 1989: Anatoly Kvochur ejects from a vertically falling MiG-29 from an altitude of less than a hundred meters—and is flying again the next morning. Fairford 1993: two MiG-29s collide over an air show, one is cut in half, both pilots eject—one from the inverted aircraft down to the ground, the other from a chaotic spin—and both rise without a scratch. The finale is how yesterday's adversary came to test this seat, and how the same device once carried Yuri Gagarin out of space. The main question of the entire episode: if salvation is always worth the blow to the body, where is the limit?
