Po Pin Chau | High Island Reservoir East Dam

Po Pin Chau (破邊洲) is a small island off the southeast coast of Sai Kung East Country Park, Hong Kong. Part of the UNESCO Global Geopark, it features impressive hexagonal rock columns formed from volcanic eruptions 140 million years ago. Distance - 2.6km Duration - 2.5 hours Difficulty - 2/5 Beginner to Intermediate ⭐️⭐️ The hike is easy and offers stunning views of ancient rock formations, the High Island Reservoir East Dam, and beautiful beaches. If you enjoy hiking and want to explore less-traveled paths, consider visiting Sai Kung and hiking Po Pin Chau. After arriving at East Dam, find the stairs opposite the minibus stop. At the top, look for a red danger sign to your right, then head past it for a quick ascent to Fa Shan Viewpoint on your left. Enjoy the views of East Dam, High Island Reservoir, and the South China Sea, noting the distinct colors of the water. Continue on the trail, which may become overgrown, until you again get a panoramic view of East Dam and Po Pin Chau. Near the top of Fa Shan, follow the sign to Po Pin Chau and descend the stairs. You’ll reach "trash beach,” which, unfortunately, is littered. After passing the beach, climb the next hill, where the path shifts to dirt and offers breathtaking views over the South China Sea and “The Heart of Hong Kong.” At the top, you’ll find a giant 'X'. From there, carefully descend to Po Pin Chau Viewpoint, which offers stunning coastal scenery, especially if visited on weekdays to avoid crowds. To return to East Dam, retrace your steps or take the shorter, technical coastal route. Avoid descending the first path you see; instead, head to the black and white marker to find a safer drainage slope. Crossing the oceanside wall of East Dam, catch a glimpse of Po Pin Chau behind the dolosse. At the upper dam, check out the hexagonal rock formations before heading back to the pavilion, where taxis await to take you back to Sai Kung or elsewhere.
