Nearly ninety, Pablo Picasso found himself in an utterly changed world. He was restless: “I have less and less time, and yet I have more and more to say.” But it was this sense of urgency that would allow him to create some of the greatest paintings of his career. In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Simon Shaw examines the late work and life of Pablo Picasso through the vibrant and dynamic Mousquetaire à La Pipe. Towards the end of his life, the image of the musketeer evoked Picasso's Spanish heritage and his nostalgia for the youthful vigor of his early years. The influence of salon painters like Velázquez are evident in Mousquetaire à La Pipe, and yet with his fluid technique remains explicitly experimental.
