The former Hacienda San Melchor del Cojo, affectionately known as “El Cojo,” is a place steeped in history and charm dating back to the colonial era. Located in the municipality of González, Tamaulipas, this hacienda has been an important symbol in the region. Origins and Owners: Colonial: In the second half of the 18th century, the hacienda began as a ranch known as San Melchor del Cojo. During this time, it belonged to Melchor de Noriega, a prominent official in the government of Nuevo Santander. 19th Century: In the 19th century, the hacienda changed hands several times. First, it was owned by the Quintero brothers, Juan and Cayetano, who were royalist colonels. Later, Diego de la Lastra, a Spanish merchant from Tampico, acquired it. Manuel González: At the end of the 19th century, General Manuel González Flores, then President of Mexico and a close associate of Porfirio Díaz, purchased the hacienda. During his presidential term, González made the hacienda the center of a network of properties in Tamaulipas and the Huasteca region. Notable Events: Assault by Xavier Mina: In 1817, the insurgent Xavier Mina raided the hacienda and took a herd of horses, leaving a mark on the history of the place. Subdivision: In the 1920s, the hacienda grounds were divided, although a significant portion of the property still belongs to descendants of the González family. The former Hacienda San Melchor del Cojo is not only a testament to Mexico's rich colonial and post-colonial history, but also a reflection of the political and economic dynamics that have shaped the region.
