Kouri Richins: The Defense Folded Without a Fight — Then the Jury Came Back Guilty
This week in Hidden Killers' Week in Review, we look back at the moment the Kouri Richins murder trial effectively ended before the verdict was ever read. On Day 13, after a one-hour recess, the defense rested without calling a single witness. Three were reportedly ready. Weeks remained on the calendar. It was over before lunch — and in hindsight, the jury's guilty verdict makes that decision look even more significant. Tony Brueski breaks down everything that built to that moment: the final cross-examination of lead investigator Detective Jeff O'Driscoll, the directed verdict motion the judge denied, and the legal trap that left the defense with nowhere to go. But the conventional legal explanation only goes so far. The deeper question — what prolonged public exposure does to a specific type of defendant, and what pressures the attorneys were navigating that nobody was discussing — gets the analysis it deserves. Then defense attorney and former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis takes it further. The drug use theory the defense built their case around was gutted by a judicial ruling, contradicted by people who knew Eric Richins personally, and undermined by forensic toxicology. The prosecution's two key immunity witnesses both changed their stories. A detective's own recorded words were used against the state mid-trial. And sitting across from all of that was a deception record that proved impossible to walk a jury back from: phone searches, memes, a jailhouse letter written as a destruction instruction, a forged insurance signature, and text messages asking for more fentanyl three days after Eric died. The jury deliberated for three hours. Guilty on all counts. This is how it got there.
