While Austria boasts charming, historically grown villages, many French ski resorts are specifically designed for winter sports. This makes them more functional, international, and you'll usually find ski-in/ski-out access almost everywhere. Large hotels are more common than quaint guesthouses, and self-catering and short distances to the slopes are standard. 🏔️ Slopes, Lifts & Mountain Landscape France, especially its top ski resorts, is extremely high-alpine. Many areas are well over 3,000 meters high with sweeping panoramas, and often even views of Mont Blanc. Austria, on the other hand, currently boasts state-of-the-art lift infrastructure. The skiing style also differs: In France, the focus seems to be on the sheer enjoyment of the slopes, not so much on performance or perfect technique. This also means fewer perfectly groomed runs, but more natural terrain, steep descents, and a freeride feel. 🍽️ Food & Après-Ski Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn vs. Raclette and Fondue. There are, of course, clear culinary differences. Even the mountain huts are different. In France, you're more likely to find picnic areas where you bring your own food, or bistros. Après-ski is different here, too. France is often quieter and more refined, but it also has real party hotspots like Val Thorens with the legendary La Folie Douce. There's plenty of partying here, but it's more about electronic music with an international crowd and champagne showers. Definitely not the typical party-sporting après-ski scene. 💰 Prices & Costs France is still considered very expensive by many, but that's no longer necessarily the case. Ski passes are often similar to those in Austria, and accommodations are frequently even cheaper due to the simpler standard. This is all balanced out by the longer journey. Depending on the ski resort, you can expect to be on the road for 9-10 hours. This means longer drives, higher fuel costs, and toll fees. France is still perceived as very expensive by many, but that's no longer necessarily true. Ski passes are often comparable to those in Austria, and accommodations are frequently even cheaper due to the simpler standard. ⭐ Ski Resort Tips in France • Val Thorens: Europe's highest ski resort in the world's largest ski area • Alpe d'Huez: home to the legendary Sarenne, the longest black run in the Alps • Tignes & Val d'Isère: sporty, high-alpine, with an impressive glacier landscape • Les 2 Alpes & Avoriaz: still on our bucket list If you enjoyed the video, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe so you don't miss anything! :)
